The Minister for Internal Affairs, Jeje Odongo has revealed that there’s a plan by The National Unity Platform (NUP) headed by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine to destabilize the country after a peaceful election. The minister described the Jan 14 election in which Yoweri Museveni was declared winner as very successful.
“There is no secret in the intentions of the National Unity Platform. They are still bent on trying to destabilise with an intention that President Museveni, who won the election, doesn’t swear in,” Odongo said on a live TV interview today morning.
Bobi Wine contested and was second best to incumbent Yoweri Museveni, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The minister said that the state is aware of alleged violent plans masterminded by internal groups here in Uganda assisted by external groups.
“I believe external forces are fueling the situation in the country. I have evidence of external factors and agencies. We have no reason to be unduly worried. This is a matter we can control. Indeed the country will continue on the trajectory of a peaceful, growing country,” Odongo said.
The minister stressed that the situation in the country at the moment is not as bad as some people mostly those in the opposition want to make it look. He noted that many Ugandans are able to go about their work except one or two individuals who want to interfere with that. He vowed that the government will not allow that to happen.
The minister recently presented the names of those people who were reported missing after being arrested by security agencies.
“I have a duty to Ugandans. I presented names and the reasons why those people were arrested and where they can be found. No one is being held in a safe house or CMI dungeon. I wish I could meet and talk to those people saying they had been tortured in safe houses. I don’t have that experience or knowledge,” the minister said.
“As long as someone has committed an offence, we have no apology. If we get you on camera doing something wrong, that is a crime. The due process of court is a different matter. There are also stories of people being tortured but whether they are true is a different matter,” he added.
Minister Jeje Odongo also denied contradicting with the president on the exact number of who people the state is holding. “The President did inform you that they are 330 that we are holding. I have given a list of 177. We will continue to give you as we process the full list. There is no contradiction in the numbers. I am only releasing lists as the numbers are being processed. Many of these cases are court issues,” he explained.
“I can’t say the unaccounted for people are dead. The President made a commitment at the IPOD summit to discuss this matter, so we still have information that we shall share with the public. I can’t say there is anyone dead. I have no information to that effect,” the minister added.
