Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama’s Electoral Commission has hammered the last nail in the controversial ownership of National Unity Platform (NUP).
NUP founder Moses Nkonge Kibalama attempted to overthrow the current party leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine from the party’s presidency.
Kibalama even attempted to shift the party headquarters from Kamwokya to Kabowa in Lubaga division. He advised Bobi Wine’s NUP to handover all party instruments and directed NUP Members of Parliament to report to the new party headquarters immediately.
However, today, Leonard Mulekwah, the Secretary to the Electoral Commission has responded to Kibalama’s letter dated 27th of May 2022.
In his letter dated 21st of June 2022, Mulekwah informed Kibalama that the alleged party delegates conference that elected him and other party leaders was illegal and doesn’t comply with the party’s Constitution.
Mulekwah noted, “According to Article 6.2(c)(ii) of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Constitution, the Delegates Conference is Convened and chaired by the president, except that the president may delegate in writing, the power to chair it or any part thereof to any member of the National Executive Committee.
“Further, no communication is on record in respect to resignation and or rescinding of office by the said Executive Committee, who according to Article 6.2 (c) (i) of the party Constitution should hold office for 5 five years. This is, therefore, to inform you that the convening of the Delegates Conference and election of the National Executive Committee ought to comply with the National Unity Platform Constitution.”
He further reminded Kibalama that on 21st July, 2020, him and Paul Ssimbwa Kagombe submitted to the Electoral Commission that they had resigned from the party leadership.
“You will recall that in the final submissions you made to the Electoral Commission on 21st July 2020, you and Mr.Ssimbwa Paul Kagombe resigned as Party Leaders and both of you signed as out-going leaders,” Mulekwah said.
He further explained that from the time they declared that they had resigned and handed over power to new party leaders, it is now illegal for them to hold a party meeting to elect party leaders.
He further told them that Kyagulanyi Sentamu is the recognised party president and David Lewis Rubongoya is the party Secretary General.
Others include; Dr. Lina Zedrige Waru who is Vice President for Northern Region, Hon. Jolly Mugisha for Western Region, Hon. Nambetshe John Baptist for Eastern Region, and Hon. Mathias Mpuuga for Central Region.
