National Unity Platform (NUP) have disclosed that they are going to support Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Moses Attan for Soroti East Parliamentary by-election.
In a press conference held at the NUP Headquarters today, NUP General Secretary, Lewis Rubongoya said that they have made the decision in the interest of the unity of the forces of change.
“Although we had very good potential candidates in Soroti, we are doing this in the broader interest of the unity of the Forces of Change. We believe that Hon. Attan legitimately won the previous election which was interrupted by a court decision,” Rubongoya said.
He noted that they will be rallying the people of Soroti as a united force to take him back to Parliament because they are stronger when they come together.
Rubongoya divulged that, “This is what we have been saying that we are not just interested in political seats but unseating the dictator. We are showing the country that we don’t just talk about unity in words but also in practice.”
On May 24, 2022, Court of Appeal annulled the election of Mr. Attan and ordered for fresh election for Soroti City East Constituency.
During the ruling, three justices led by Cheborion Barishaki nullified the election of Attan’s victory on grounds that it was illegal for the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconstitute the boundaries of Soroti City East Constituency by removing the parishes of Aloet and Opilyai and placing them under Soroti City West Constituency.
“EC had no powers to distort the composition of the Soroti City East Constituency by removing the parishes of Aloet and Opilyai, which had 1,337 voters and 3,896 voters respectively and placing them where the said voters did not belong,” the justices ruled.
Attan had been challenged by his political rival, Mr. Herbert Edmund Ariko of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who stated that there were election malpractices and voter disenfranchisement.
Meanwhile, Electoral Commission has issued a road map for the Soroti East MP by-election and nominations of candidates will take place on July 18th and 19th.
