Journalists Give Army 48 Hours To Produce Their Men Who Tortured Their Colleagues

Journalist under their organization Human Rights Network for Journalists – Uganda (HRNJ-U) have given the army 48 hours to produce their officers who tortured their colleagues.

While addressing the press today at hotel Triangle in Kampala, Robert Ssempala the national coordinator HRNJ-U warned that they have given the army a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest, parade and prosecute their men who tortured journalists.

“They should also give us their names and numbers so that we can monitor them during prosecution. All along they have been telling us that they are going to prosecute the culprits who torture our colleagues, but nothing is done after, this time we want to monitor the whole process to the end ourselves,” Ssempala said.

He added that if the 48-hours elapse without any response from security forces, he is going to mobilise all journalists from all media houses around the country to stop covering all police and army activities in protest.

“We have to protect our lives and our profession now. We want to see the culprits arrested and prosecuted,” Ssempala added.

Ssempala added that they also want the security forces to pay the medical bills of all affected journalist. He wondered why media owners are silent when their staff are being tortured.

“Where are the media owners when their staff/journalists are being tortured? We want them to come out and declare themselves on this by adding their voice and reproving such acts.”

Yesterday, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire released a statement saying that the army was going to arrest and punish the soldiers who molested journalists.

“UPDF wishes to express its displeasure over such behaviour by those individuals, and as a result, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has ordered for their arrest and punishment,” Karemire’s letter read in part.

Ssempala says this is the same song they have been singing without visible actions every time journalists are tortured, that is why as HRNJ-U, they want to monitor the whole process from arrest to prosecution and detention.

Police in Mukono has arrested Rehema Mahayana 24 for allegedly cutting off her boyfriend’s penis.
Rehema told police she waited until her boyfriend Anthony Sekawa 28, had fallen asleep then cut off his manhood with a 4-inch knife.
Sekawa told police that he got into a fight with Rehema as he was trying to save his life because the she never stopped at taking his whopper but she also tried to slit his throat.
Sekawa was later saved by his neighbours who heard him shout because of the pain after his penis had been detached.
Upon arrest, Rehema told police that she had recently discovered her boyfriend was seeing different girls at a brothel located in Wantoni Mukono District and hatched the revenge plot against Sekawa.
“I discovered that he was secretly going out and flirting with other girls at different bars. This made me very angry. I was full of anger inside and couldn’t relax,” she narrated.
Sekawa was rushed to Namirembe Hospital for treatment while Kabayana was arrested and held in custody over the attack.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that Mukono Police had received an emergency call about a man’s penis being cut off with a knife and responded so fast.
Owoyesigyire said that police arrived along with rescue staff and found the man severely injured and was rushed to hospital.
Detectives have discovered that the two had longtime relationship misunderstandings and that the suspect had on several occasions demanded he ceases contact with any other women, including not talking to them, answering their calls or even smiling at them which he however declined to adhere to.
The victim told police that he loved his girlfriend and believed she maimed his manhood in a grizzly bid to make sure he did not stray looking for other women.

THANK YOU UPDF: Men Who Tortured DP Man Were Sent By Enemies Within To Tarnish The Name Of NRM Govt – Minister Tumwebaze

The Minister of Information Technology and Communications, Hon. Frank Tumwebaze has said that the five security officers who tortured and brutally arrested Yusuf Kawooya on Thursday in broad day light were enemy collaborators.

Thrugh his twitter handle, Tumwebaze says that their key mission was to tarnish the name of the current regime in power and give credence to the anti- government propaganda.

He thanked the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) leadership for tracing and bringing the culprits to book.

“I thank the leadership of UPDF for tracing & bringing to book those characters. I insist those fellows must be enemy-collaborators plotting within to tarnish the name of NRM & give credence to anti-govt propaganda. Let’s be aware & expose enemy agents,” he tweeted.

Yesterday, the army court arrested and charged the five operatives. They pleaded guilty to the offences and asked for a lighter sentence.

On Thursday afternoon, at the junction between Colville Street and Portal Avenue adjacent to Theatre Labonita and Christ The King Church, at around 01:20pm, five security operatives armed with guns brutally arrested a one Yusuf Kawooya and tossed him into a waiting PSV Matatu Reg. No. UAF 325S.

Yusuf Kawooya, the man in the video is aged 43 and resident of Bulamu Village in Gayaza. Kawooya is said to be butcher in Kitintale, a Kampala suburb and also a political activist who is a member of the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD).

Five security operatives who tortured Yusuf Kawooya on Thursday along Colville Street in Kampala have been arrested and charged in the military court martial.
The army paraded them but did not give details regarding the charges they are going to face.

Their prosecution was effected vide case number UDC/041/18 Uganda vs Cpl Ssenkungu Daniel and others.
