More The plot to assassinate Former police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi according to detectives wasn’t a one day mission but rather a plot that hosted over 10 meetings by operatives from flying squad and five other operatives from another country which country we won’t reveal for now.
According to our security sources who are detectives working on the case, a confession from Abel Kitagenda, the former Kampala Metropolitan North flying squad commander, and is currently under detention for allegedly being in the plot to crush the former police mouthpiece, the attempt to assassinate Kaweesi failed on four occasions due to his continuous change of his daily movements.
Detectives have been told that by the time Kaweesi’s killers decided to hire his driver, numerous attempts against his life had failed and the driver was the game changer.
Security sources have told this website that the recruitment of the Driver in the Mission gave more strength to the assailants who had failed to find a breakthrough. What brought more joy to the killers was when the driver was contacted; he told them that he was willing to help them betray his boss as long as they were willing to pay him whatever amount of money he wanted.
Detectives told this website that the assailants in the first week of March had plotted to end Kaweesi’s life in Entebbe according to his movement plan that the driver had given to them. However, Kaweesi, who was supposed to meet his side dish Christine Mbabazi Muhooza called her and told her that he had canceled the meeting.
He later met Christine Muhooza at Kanjokya Street in Kamwokya. Here, the Assailants kept an eye on him with hope of ending him that night or the next morning.
How Kaweesi Survived that Night
Security sources have told the Grapevine that after his meeting with Muhooza in Kamwokya, Kaweesi went to Kira Police station where he picked an armed Patrol car that took him to his office and later escorted him home.
The assailants who were following Kaweesi that night, according to a confession from Kitagenda, had no option but to divide themselves in to two teams. One team slept in Kulambiro while the other slept in Gayaza. Their plan was to regroup the next day and according to Abel Kitagenda’s confession, they reported at the scene where Kaweesi was later gunned down at 5:00 am.
Why his driver betrayed him
Security sources working on the case have told this website that according to confessions from detained police bosses, after failing in their plans to end Kaweesi’s life on four occasions, a senior police commander who had a juicy office at Naguru and another boss in Flying squad unit came up with the decision to involve the driver in the plot.
They had to hook mouthwatering bait that the driver would easily swallow. The senior commander at Naguru, who is also detained at Makindye army prison, confirmed the meeting between Kaweesi’s driver and his would be assassins.
They did a background check on the driver and the Naguru police commander later told them that he wouldn’t reject the offer because he had spent close to four months without being paid. He told them that giving the driver huge sums of money would easily sway him.
This senior police boss after contacting the driver went further and sent him money for three months for his up keep before the assassination plot. He also made a deposit of part of the money that the driver was supposed to be paid for his involvement in the deal as a way of confirming to him that all will be well after the deal.
Security sources piecing up the evidence told this website that the move was aimed at making sure that the driver’s trust does not waiver and that he would confidently execute his part of the deal.
The driver was supposed to flash the headlights to confirm to the killers that Kaweesi was inside the car.
On the morning that Kaweesi was killed, his driver first drove Kaweesi’s Kids to school, the killers were already in place but he never flashed the car lights.
They thought that he had bowed out of the deal; they panicked and reported to their big boss, the boss allegedly quickly called Kaweesi to know his whereabouts and check his movements.
Later, the driver came back and picked Kaweesi. This time when he reached the agreed spot, he flashed the lights and the assailants fired rapidly at his car. A top police boss who was also in flying squad later opened the door and shot Kaweesi in the head and through the ear.
The driver, who was assured that he would be spared, tried to jump out and join his colleagues but was also shot to kill all evidence.
Kaweesi was assassinated on 17th March 2017 as he left his home in Kulambiro, a Kampala suburb. Investigations into his murder took almost a year with no clear report despite the numerous arrests of Muslims. President Museveni later ended Kale Kayihura’s reign as Inspector General of Police and ordered fresh investigations into Kaweesi’s murder.
Since then, a number of senior police commanders have been arrested and detained by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence.
