LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS TODAY: Here Are The Six Managers To Replace Mourinho, Lacazette Wants To Quit Arsenal, Champions League Draw: The Favourites

MANCHESTER UNITED are backing Jose Mourinho for now – but reportedly have Zinedine Zidane on a list of six potential successors.
Manchester United manager Mourinho is under-fire just three games into the new Premier League season with defeats to Brighton and Tottenham plunging his job into uncertainty.
According to, the Red Devils will stick, rather than twist. Ed Woodward, despite axing David Moyes and Louis van Gaal in the past, is keen to avoid any knee-jerk reactions.
Yet the Independent say Manchester United are making contingency plans in case the situation worsens.
It is claimed that they have Zidane on the list, with the Frenchman out of work after leaving Real Madrid in May.
Yet Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino is their ideal candidate instead.
Pochettino is seen as difficult to obtain, though, due to the fact Tottenham would not let him leave halfway through the season.
Negotiations would also be difficult in the summer given his importance to the club.
Zidane is available for now but quit Real to take a sabbatical. There are yet to be any signs he would back down on that plan.
But the Independent say four other names are in the frame.
Didier Deschamps, fresh from winning the World Cup with France, makes the list.
Leonardo Jardim has worked wonders at Monaco and also makes the cut.
Massimiliano Allegri, who has helped Juventus become Italy’s dominant force, has been included.
But a shock fourth name is Everton manager Marco Silva.
Silva has only just taken over at Goodison Park but it appears United are among his admirers.
For now, Mourinho’s job is safe.
But defeat to Burnley on Sunday will reportedly see him axed.

Champions League draw: Who are favourites to win?

The Champions League group stage draw is set to take place in Monaco tomorrow evening, with 32 teams all going into the hat ahead of Europe’s greatest club competition.
Real Madrid are the defending champions after a night of heartbreak for Liverpool in Kiev last season.
Mohamed Salah suffered a nightmare injury before two howlers from Loris Karius ensured the Reds would go home empty-handed.
Liverpool are back for another crack at the tournament this year, with Jurgen Klopp’s men joined by Premier League rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.
All four English clubs are among the top 10 teams most likely to win the competition.
The quartet are joined by Juventus, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain among the frontrunners ahead of the group stage draw.

    Martial to outlast Jose

Manchester United have offered a new five-year deal to Anthony Martial – despite Jose Mourinho being eager to sell the Frenchman this summer.
United want to keep Martial at Old Trafford going forward following a pre-season of speculation regarding the 22-year-old’s future.
Mourinho was angered when Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, revealed the forward was keen to move having been ommitted from France’s World Cup-winning squad.
However, Manchester United have decided to offer the former Monaco ace the chance to stay put until 2023 so they can protect his transfer value.
Martial has entered the final 12 months of the initial four-year deal he put pen to paper on when joining United in the summer of 2015.
United have offered him the one-year option in his original contact on top of this season to take him to 2020, plus another three years.
Martial is happy to sign the new deal because he believes he will outlast Jose Mourinho at United.

Wanted: Marcos Alonso to replace Marcelo

Real Madrid want to sign Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso to replace Marcelo, reports claim.
Yesterday, Italian newspaper Tuttosport claimed that Juventus were planning an audacious swoop to bring Marcelo to Turin in 2019.
Juventus signed Cristiano Ronaldo last month and would like to reunite him with former Bernabeu friend and colleague Marcelo.
Tuttosport via Transfermarketweb have continued the story today by suggesting that Alonso, 27, is viewed as his long-term replacement.

    Ed Woodward wanted Gareth Bale

Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward reportedly told Jose Mourinho he would sign Gareth Bale – but not Ivan Perisic.
Manchester United are already off to a difficult start in the Premier League, with defeats to Brighton and Tottenham piling the pressure on Mourinho’s shoulders.
And the Evening Standard have now delved into how the situation was allowed to become so precarious.
Mourinho has never been one for long-term planning, instead choosing to focus on the here and now.
That was why he earmarked the likes of Alderweireld and Perisic as solutions to his current problems.
Woodward was willing to break the bank for Bale, despite him being the same age as the aforementioned duo.
But the Evening Standard say he was not keen to sign Perisic because the Inter Milan star has no re-sale value.
Bale, on the other hand, would have been a vital asset to United off the pitch, as well as on it.

Alexandre Lacazette wants out of Arsenal

Alexandre Lacazette is considering quitting Arsenal this week over fears he doesn’t fit into Unai Emery’s plans, reports claim.
Lacazette has failed to start any of Arsenal’s three Premier League games so far with Emery giving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the nod.
Last term under Arsene Wenger, Lacazette wasn’t always fancied by Arsene Wenger and when he did start, was often substituted before the end of matches.
And according to French outlet Le10 Sport, Lacazette could push for a move away from the Emirates with some transfer windows in Europe still open.
It is said that the striker has been enquired about by a handful of foreign clubs, although it is believed the Gunners will do what they can to keep hold of him.

Lionel Messi would never leave Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Real Madrid to Juventus has been criticised by former Madrid star Rafael van der Vaart.
The ex-Tottenham attacker believes Lionel Messi would never leave Barcelona and has compared the Argentinian ace to Ronaldo.
Ronaldo made the move from Real Madrid to Juventus during the summer after nine successful years at the Bernabeu.
“You know, guys like Messi… Messi will never leave Barcelona,” Van der Vaart told “I’m slightly sad about Ronaldo’s departure.”
