Senior police detective Robert Baluma (35) has told High Court judge Flavia Senoga that he was forced to record city tycoon Muhammad Sebuufu’s statement regarding the murder of his client Katushabe, who he allegedly thumped to death.
Baluma said that on 28/12/2015, some senior detectives stormed their offices at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala and ordered him to record a statement on the circumstances surrounding the death of Katushabe.
“My Lord, I didn’t state whatever you saw concerning Katushabe’s murder. Some superior from above stormed our offices with guns and ordered us to make a statement,” Baluma said.
Baluma told court that on 22/10/2015, he was called to the office of his immediate boss Rebecca Namugenyi, the former CIID Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) department.
On reaching Namugenyi’s office, he found her in company of a one Muzafal Zirabamuzaale who was seated on the same chair with Sebuufu. Namugenyi instructed Baluma to record a statement from Sebuufu concerning the murder that had just happened at his pine car bond.
Baluma started recording the statement from Sebuufu but surprisingly, while he was still writing the statement, Namugenyi ordered him to run to flying squad offices where he will find two gentlemen.
Baluma said that on reaching flying squad offices, he was informed to take statements from the two men (Mirambi and Kayiza). He said that after writing their statements, he filled a police form 74, took them to CPS police station and detained them.
Court also received a testimony from Eliphose Turyagenda, a police detective based in Ntungamo who said that in 2015, he was a detective at KMP CIID department. He told court that while at KMP CIID department, he was instructed by his boss Rebecca Namugenyi to go and search Sebuufu’s work place at pine car bond. Turyagyenda searched the entire place and failed to discover anything related to the murder of Katushabe. He made a search form and gave it to his boss Namugenyi.
After, he filled detention forms as instructed by his boss Aaron Baguma the former commander CPS police station.
“My Lord, I submitted form 74 to Baguma who signed and stamped it, he later ordered me to arrest Sebuufu together with Steven Lwanga and a one Kamonde who we found at pine car bond,” Turyagyenda narrated.
He confirmed that he is the one who arrested Sebuufu and after, his boss Baguma ordered the police patrol to drive Sebuufu and others to Kireka Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU).
Court also heard from Peter Opolot the OC station Bwebajja police station. He said that on 21/10/2015, while at Bwebajja police station, he received four people who were moving in a small white car. Opolot said that three of the men were policemen in uniform carrying AK47 guns and one was a civilian.
Opolot said that they told him that they were from CPS police, they even showed him a police reference. They told him that they had instructions to arrest a woman at Bwebajja village. Opolot told them to make a statement showing the particulars of the person they were going to arrest. They refused to record the statement so he decided to write them in the record book.
“My Lord, I decided to record in our record book the name of the police lady who was with these people. She was called ASP Nyanzi,” Opolot said.
He told court that these people never come back to him but he later established that they arrested Katushabe.
Sebuufu and seven others are charged with killing Betty Katushabe because she failure to pay the balance of nine million shillings after purchasing a Toyota Premio vehicle from his pine car bond. The case was adjourned to tomorrow when prosecution will produce more witnesses.
