RESULTS: Dark Days For Mourinho At Man United Start, Ronaldo Makes Winning Juve Start, Guardiola Praise Aguero After Hat-Trick

    on

(Brighton 3 – Man Utd 2):  The dark final days on the future of Man United manager Jose Mourinho started today.  Mourinho who is not in good books with the club executive vice chairman Ed Woodward was thumped by last season’s survivors Brighton and Hove Albion.
Brighton were very impressive and worked hard to make their opponents fail in many departments.
The Seagulls beat United in May to retain their Premier League status, but few expected a repeat result on Sunday. United boss Jose Mourinho warned in the summer that his side faced “a difficult season” if they did not strengthen before the transfer window closed.
The Portuguese had highlighted his side’s defence as an area that needed bolstering, but deadline day passed without any new arrivals.
Mourinho’s concerns were laid bare against Brighton, with his defence caught out on a number of occasions by Brighton’s quick movement.
Bailly, in particular, struggled. Aside from giving away the penalty he also miscontrolled a pass in the second half that momentarily put March through before the Ivorian was able to recover.
United have conceded four goals in their opening two games of the season – it took them nine to let in that many last season.

Ronaldo Serie A Win For New Club Juventus

(Chievo 2 – Juventus 3): Cristiano Ronaldo made a winning start to his Juventus career as his new club came from behind to beat Chievo 3-2 in a dramatic start to the Serie A season.
Federico Bernardeschi scored a 93rd-minute winner, moments after Juve had a goal ruled out by VAR with Ronaldo at the centre of the incident.
The Portugal captain, a £99.2m signing from Real Madrid, handled the ball before colliding with Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino in the build-up to Mario Mandzukic’s goal, which referee Fabrizio Pasqua ruled out on review.
Sami Khedira had put Juventus, who have won the past seven Serie A titles, ahead from close range in the third minute, before Mariusz Stepinski headed in the equaliser.
Emanuele Giaccherini won and scored a penalty to put Chievo in front on 56 minutes, but a Mattia Bani own goal pegged them back before Bernardeschi struck late on.
Ronaldo, 33, scored in his first game for the Old Lady – their traditional pre-season friendly against the Juventus B team.
That match was held in the small Italian town of Villar Perosa. Its population is 4,000 – but Ronaldo’s appearance drew 5,000 fans.
His presence in Verona led to Chievo selling out their 39,000-seater Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi, as they more than doubled their average attendance.
Speaking before the match, coach Massimiliano Allegri said he had yet to decide Ronaldo’s best position in the team.
With Gonzalo Higuain on loan at AC Milan, the former Manchester United forward started up front on his own against Chievo, with Paulo Dybala in the number 10 role and Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado on the wings.

    Guardiola Praises Aguero after Hat-trick

(Man City 6 – Huddersfield 1): Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said Sergio Aguero is in the best condition he has seen him in, after the striker scored a superb hat-trick in a thumping win over Huddersfield.
Aguero opened the scoring in the first half before adding two goals after the break to complete his 13th career hat-trick and ninth in the Premier League. Only Alan Shearer, with 11, has scored more in the competition.
“I never saw him like this since I was here,” Guardiola said.
The defending champions, who beat Arsenal 2-0 in their opening match, lost only once at home in 2017-18, and victory never looked in doubt against a Huddersfield team who have now been beaten in their first two games.
The Terriers did manage to hold City at bay for 25 minutes but were undone when goalkeeper Ederson picked out Aguero with a pinpoint pass and the striker drew out Ben Hamer before lifting the ball into the net.
Gabriel Jesus added a second seven minutes later with a crisp low strike from the edge of the area, before Aguero pounced on a Hamer error to stab in his second.
Jon Gorenc Stankovic gave the visitors the slightest glimmer of hope before half-time when he poked in from Steve Mounie’s flick-on, but any optimism was snuffed out early in the second half by a brilliant free-kick from David Silva.
Aguero wrapped up his hat-trick with a smart flick from Benjamin Mendy’s cross – before a Terence Kongolo own goal sealed an emphatic win for an impressive City.
Guardiola’s side are top of the table and have scored eight goals in two games, conceding just one. Huddersfield, meanwhile, drop to the bottom on goal difference.

    Messi Lifts Barcelona

(Barcelona 3 – Alavés 0): Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona got their La Liga title defence off to a winning start with a deserved, hard-fought victory over Alaves.
Messi fired a fantastic free-kick under the wall to open the scoring – Barcelona’s 6,000th La Liga goal.
Half-time substitute Philippe Coutinho then cut inside to curl home a second. And Messi controlled Luis Suarez’s pass with his chest, beat two defenders and steered a low shot into the bottom corner of the net in injury time.
Messi, now Barcelona’s captain after Andres Iniesta’s move to Japan, had also hit the woodwork twice – with a free-kick that deflected off the bar and another effort coming off the post.
He has scored in 15 consecutive La Liga seasons. Barcelona were made to work hard for the win by Alaves, who offered little going forward and only had three shots, none on target, and 21% possession.

I’m Not Leaving Chelsea – Eden Hazard

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard says he “will not leave” the club before the European transfer window shuts on 31 August.
The Belgium forward, who has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, said in July that “it might be time to discover something different”, adding that his “preferred destination” was known.
However, the 27-year-old now says he is “happy” to remain at Stamford Bridge. “I’m fine here. We’ll see what happens in a year or two,” he told RMC Sport.
“Leave this year? I will not leave. Everybody knows what I said after the World Cup – but I’m happy here.”
The Premier League and Football League voted to shut the transfer window before the start of the English top-flight season, which kicked off on 10 August.
However, the change did not affect European clubs, who can still sign players – including Premier League ones – until their respective deadlines later in the month.
Hazard, who has won five major trophies since joining Chelsea in 2012, added he could see that “the fans still love me” from the reception he received during the Blues’ 3-2 league win over Arsenal on Saturday.
