The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has suspended the Koona show that airs on Spark TV every Friday the Grapevine has learnt.

The suspension comes  after Lubaga South legislator Hon. Kato Lubwama lost his cool and jabbed a fellow panelist on air in that show which aired December 21, on Spark TV and saw also Hon. Lubwama swing a slap while deep in altercation with Events Promoter, Andrew Bajjo. Lubwama would then kick away the table before standing up and throwing a few more jabs at Bajjo and marching off the show in protest.

Following the live-on –air interview turned ring side, UCC elaborated that; “These are unacceptable behaviour that infringes broadcasting standards. Broadcasters are expected to have mechanisms in place to edit out such inappropriate content. The Commission has noted this and will be dealing with the same decisively,” and  now the Commission claims that the specific show breached minimum broadcasting standard hence suspended.

“On Dec 21st 2018, Spark TV aired a program ‘Koona’, where we noticed total breach of the Minimum Broadcasting Standards, breach of it’s licence terms and conditions and the law. The Program,’Koona’, producer and presenter of this show have henceforth been suspended Immediately,” a tweet from UCC reads

Twitter Message By UCC

“Lets be mindful of this: Section 31(a) (ii) and (iv) of the Uganda Communications Act 2013 prohibits broadcasters from broadcasting any program or content that directly or indirectly promotes hatred or a culture of violence and likely to incite and/or glorify violent behaviours,” UCC continues.

When contacted, the show presenter Miles Rwamiti confirmed he had seen UCC’s communication but insisted “everything is under control .”

“But they cant suspend me, I don’t work for them,” Rwamiti added.
