UGA 0-0 BFA: Back To The Drawing Board – Technically, Here’s How The Cranes Can Qualify…

The Uganda Cranes starting XI against Burkina Faso

The Uganda national soccer team, Cranes have played out to a 0-0 stalemate against Burkina Faso at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

Uganda’s best chance of the game came from substitute Ibrahim Orit, whose header razed off the cross bar. Aston Villa striker Bertrand Traore was a threat through out  the game but Cranes defenders managed to stop him from scoring.

It is the third consecutive goalless draw between Uganda and Burkina Faso and today’s result secures qualification for the Stallions to the final tournament that will be held in Cameroon.

After 90 minutes of squandered chances and unlucky moments, the referee finally blew his whistle for the last time for the evening and each team took one point from the game, but Burkina Faso celebrated the most because they knew they had just sealed their qualification for the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon.

The Stallions have put themselves at a very advantageous position that even if they don’t maintain their first position after the final round of qualification, they still will not have to be lower than second best.

Uganda’s next game will be an outright contest as the Cranes will therefore have to draw or beat Malawi in their last group B match in order to qualify for AFCON2021.

With a game to spare, Burkina Faso top Group B with 9 points with Uganda currently in second and Malawi in 3rd at 8 & 7 points respectively. South Sudan sit bottom of the group with 3 points after loosing by a goal to nil to Malawi.

Burkina Faso after accumulating 9 points can still be surpassed by Uganda and Malawi if either of the two teams wins when they play again each other next week, only on condition that the Stallions fail to beat South Sudan.

A Uganda Airlines chartered bombardier plane will fly the Cranes out on 28th to Malawi for the final Total AFCON qualifier to be played on 29th March 2021.

Notably, the Uganda Cranes were flown on a Bombardier in their first game of the campaign against Burkina Faso which ended goalless in Ouagadougou.
