Controversial Kawaala based Revival church pastor Augustine Yiga alias Abizaayo has been charged and remanded to prison over uttering harmful propaganda that there is no coronavirus in Uganda and Africa in general.

State alleges that on 27th March 2020, Yiga told different local televisions that there is no coronavirus and African leaders are only sending their citizens in panic for their own personal benefit.

Yiga, who was before Mwanga one grade one magistrate Timothy Lumunye denied the charges and his lawyer Wilberforce Kayiwa applied that their client be released on bail. His lawyer told court that Yiga is suffering from diabates which means he has to see doctors regularly. Kayiwa further told court that his client has over eight children to look after and he is a recognized senior pastor with an address. He presented three sureties to stand for him, however his application was strongly challenged by state prosecutor Safina Bireeke who told court the applicant didn’t produce sufficient evidence like medical documents showing that he is a sick man.

She also protested that the sureties produced by Yiga were just junior pastors in his church who court cannot rely on that they will force him to come back to court when he is needed.

She further submits that police is still investigating the matter and if court releases Yiga on bail, he will intervene with the investigations. The magistrate promised to give her ruling on Yiga’s application on 04th of April this year and remanded him to Kitarya prison. He however advised Yiga’s followers to learn to implement the cautions put in place by the Ministry of Health includes distancing themselves.

We Want You To Pay 1 Billion For Lowena’s Seven Teeth, Split Jaw And Damaged Nerves – Lawyers Drag IGP Ochola To Court Over His Reckless Officers

Published

on

Martin Okoth Ochola the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is in trouble after being served with a letter asking him to pay Shs. 1bn or be taken to court over negligence.

Mulindwa Associates and Company Advocates, acting on behalf of Racheal Lowena Nkya and Irene Nakachwa who were shot during the scuffle between Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) enforcement, Uganda police and city traders have given Ochola an ultimatum.

“Lowena clad in a school uniform was shot in the mouth on her way back to school with her mother Nakachwa. Efforts to put the victims on one of the police vehicles for quick medical attention were frustrated by officers on duty who instead teargassed the people who carried the victims an act that was inhuman. The good Samaritan put them on a bodaboda motorcycle and transported them to Mulago Hospital Causality,” a letter reads in parts. Lawyers explained to Ochola that preliminary medical examinations and reports indicate that Lowena lost seven teeth, a split her jaw and her nerves were damaged by the bullet wounds.

The mother also suffered a broken bone around the elbow with a blood clot.  The lawyers also pined the policemen on duty that day that they used unnecessary force when they shot live bullets in crowded places.

They added that the policemen were extorting money from the traders and when they refused, they decided to shot at them. The bullets caught their clients who were passing by to board a taxi to school.

With the above explanation, the lawyers concluded that Uganda Police should pay Shs. 50m for medical expenses for Lowena and Shs. 10m for medical expenses for her mother. The lawyers further demand for shs1bn for damages for both of their clients. They noted that police’s negligence has caused their clients permanent disability from the bullet wounds, trauma and inconvenience to Lowena’a studies as an S.6 candidate and the physical anguish.

“We are to pursue you legally if you do not comply or the least remorsefully reach out to the family to apologise or chip in on the medical bills as mitigation factor,” the letter reads in conclusion. The Grapevine has learnt that after receiving the letter, Ochola today visited the sick people at Mulago hospital.
